SETTLING PROGRAMME FOR IMPORTED HORSES: We import our own Spanish Horses throughout the year and have developed a special programme for settling these horses into British life. Some clients choose to buy their horses direct from Spain, but are reluctant to cope with the stress of a new arrival at their own facility. Due to our wealth of experience and knowledge with this situation we offer our "settling programme" to clients importing their own horses from Spain.

The programme is set up to acclimatise horses to English systems including feeding, grazing and progressive schooling including hacking out. Many new owners may find that their Spanish horse is unaccustomed to the English ways of life and needs to be introduced to the hazards of hacking out such as the British Roads. All our imported horses are carefully introduced to grazing, and peaceful hacking in the countryside, so that they may enjoy the lifestyle we expect from our horses in the UK, which can be quite different to the lives these wonderful, patient horses have lead in Spain. Respect and care should be shown to these horses during this period of change, which can be quite a stressful time for the horse and for the new owner. Our settling programme produces a relaxed horse which has become accustomed to our ways, and which is ready to go on to it's new home fully prepared for his new life.

MANDY AND MAESTRO 2005/2006
My story goes back along way - Since just a little girl I have always dreamed of owning a beautiful black horse with a long flowing mane, who's coat gleams in the sun, don't we all!
In the summer of 2003 my dream was about to turn into reality as my lovely parents offered to buy me a horse and more importantly my husband agreed to keep it! The search was on - I knew exactly what I wanted, after all I'd been looking for years, it simply had to be an Andalusian. There was only one problem; the word Andalusian and black just didn't seem to fit into my price bracket!
Whilst searching the Internet I came across a beautiful black Dutch filly located in Holland - she was just perfect and I bought her after just viewing her photographs and video. (Of course, I would pay the price later)
We only shared a few months together as she was diagnosed with OCD and Spavin and after countless operations and the very best of care was so crippled in her hindquarters she was very sadly put to sleep the day after my birthday, a day I'll never forget.
I wasn't really looking for another horse but suddenly there he was 'Maestro' 16 h.h. 2-year-old black PRE colt. I couldn't hold back - I had to have him, the horse my dreams were made of, and he was simply stunning.. I had a long chat with his lovely owners who were in the middle of a move to Spain and with only one week to go before the move - (they had even booked his ticket!) there was no time to waste if he was going to be mine. I had to make the decision of buying him unseen, as there was no possibility of travelling hundreds of miles to view him with two young children and a Guest House to run - to name just a few!
It was then that the problems started - he was entire!
- We struggle to find a lively yard full stop here in the Highlands, let alone a yard that will take a 'Stallion'.
- Talk about the heart ruling the head - What was I going to do?
Eventually, I found a very posh warmblood stud in Glasgow who were delighted to take him in on full livery - but he still wasn't really mine as he was so far away. I barely got to see him and he still wasn't getting the attention he so deserved and through financial pressure had to make the reluctant decision of parting with him.
Maestro's advertisement attracted all sorts of people, then one day there was a glimmer of hope. I was approached by a couple who owned two Andalusian Stallions themselves who said they could help out with his training and have him gelded, backed and ready to be moved up to a livery yard near home.
I visited the yard - met their horses and thought it was worth a try - anything to have this horse with me. It was then that all my problems really started. I know that I am as much to blame as anybody and I'll never forgive myself for being so naive, despite my husbands doubts - but due to this new yard being so far away and work and family commitments I was unable to visit Maestro as often as I should have.
Initially Maestro was coming along really well - he was even starting the movements for Spanish walk and seemed very happy and settled.
I don't know how I was to become so terrified by what I heard over the telephone over the next few weeks, I still can't understand how they did it but the last time I visited Maestro I was unable to go into his stable, I was so frightened.
I was advised by the yard owners to sell him - 'You'll be lucky to get eight hundred pounds for him, I was told. 'He's just not nice, a nasty monster - he'll end up killing you, he needs specialist treatment, It could be that he has a brain lesion?????
You can't take the risk with a young family. . (Just a few of the words used to describe Maestro, that stick in my head)
Oh, how could I have let myself be taken for such a ride?
In my desperation I searched the Internet for something - I didn't know what, but knew there must be somebody out there that could help. It is then that I found 'North Farm Andalusians' and the wonderful Sheila Shepherd.
Oh, how her lovely words and calm voice gave me the very hope I had been so desperately searching for, hope that there was a future for Maestro and me after all. My heart lifted and something inside told me that everything was going to be all right
Sheila took care of everything despite being hundreds of miles away. I knew immediately that Maestro could not be in more genuine caring hands. Sheila saw immediately what Maestro needed. Within 24 hours of arriving at 'North Farm' Maestro was carefully looked over by the yards veterinary surgeon. Due to an injury to the ligaments in his back he was going to require regular visits to Willesley Equine Clinic along with intensive schooling at North farm to strengthen and build his top line. After discussing my requirements and assessing Maestro, it was decided that the best thing to do would be to castrate Maestro as soon as possible in order to give him plenty of time to make a full recovery prior to his training.
My family and I visited North farm during Maestros recovery period. We flew down to spend a long weekend with Maestro and wow..... what amazing, draw droppingly beautiful horses at this yard.
Thank you everybody at North Farm, without you all I really don't know where Maestro would be right now but I can tell you that he will NEVER EVER leave me again.
Words can't describe being given the 'all clear' from Sheila after Maestros final check-up at Willisley clinic! That day is printed clearly in my mind, I can still remember where I took the call on my mobile, outside the school gates . . .the whole world stood still that moment.
You are a yard in a million 'North Farm' - Thanks Sheila for making this all possible and all the staff for your patience in teaching me the 'Pessoa' in order to keep up all your good work at home. Most importantly I'd like to thank you all for giving me the confidence to believe in Maestro and myself and that one day we may have that partnership I've dreamed of since a little girl.
From day one Maestro had the 'very best of attention' at North Farm and despite being hundreds of miles away I was always posted of his progress and sent plenty of pictures.
He has now made a full recovery and is being ridden over hills and Glens, through Lochs and streams and most important of all we are HAPPY!
LOTS OF LOVE TO YOU SHEILA I WILL NEVER FORGET WHAT YOU HAVE DONE FOR US BOTH.
LOTS OF LOVE
